MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE AT WORKSHOP THEATER - february 14-March 10, 2013

Picture
WORKSHOP THEATER COMPANY in conjunction with JEM THEATRICALS is presenting the New York premiere production of MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE, a new family musical comedy. The musical, with book by Kate Feiffer and MJ Bruder Munafo, music by Paul Jacobs, lyrics by Sarah Durkee, is based on the acclaimed picture book MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE, by Kate Feiffer with illustrations by Diane Goode (Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books). The musical will be directed by Debbi Katz and choreographed by Danyelle Demchock of the Young Performers Dance Academy. MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE will play a four-week limited engagement at the WorkShop Theater (312 West 36th Street). Performances begin Saturday, February 16 at 12 pm and continue through Sunday, March 10 at 3 pm.

If Emma’s mom is so great, why is she trying to ruin her daughter’s life? She talks too loudly, worries about everything and kisses Emma in front of her friends. It wouldn’t be that bad if she just gave her one kiss on top of the head, but no, she kisses Emma all over her face. Can Emma stop her mom before she ruins the rest of her life? A heartwarming coming of age story with spectacular original music, MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE will have audiences laughing and singing.

The first workshop production of MY MOM IS TRYING TO RUIN MY LIFE played to sold out audiences at The Vineyard Playhouse on Martha's Vineyard in 2010. In 2011, MJ Bruder Munafo (Artistic Director of the Vineyard Playhouse) and Kate Feiffer teamed up with multiple Emmy Award-winning songwriters Paul Jacobs and Sarah Durkee to turn the play into a musical. The Vineyard Playhouse presented the first staged reading of the musical in the summer of 2012. WorkShop Theater Company’s Educational Wing presented a second reading in late 2012.

In keeping with the WorkShop Theater Company’s overall mission, the Educational Wing is dedicated to providing a creative home for young actors to hone their talents and cultivate projects from inception through finished productions.

“We work with children of diverse backgrounds to introduce the process of synthesizing new works through Page to Stage adaptations and the collaborative relationships between writers, directors, actors and designers. We pair professional teaching artists and guide young actors through the process of creating new works,” says Marie Mascia-Mancl, General Manager of Workshop Theater Company. “We have found that many professional kids are looking for a setting in which to work during the “tween” years when they can’t find continuous employment. This program allows them that home and gives us the opportunity to teach college level skills and techniques. We are very excited to bring to life this wonderful piece as we combine this amazing cast with an incredibly talented creative team. Everyone involved is helping to fulfill our mission.”

The production stars Michael Bernardi* (Surflight’s Once Upon a Time in New Jersey) as Officer Smith, Maddie Glass as Isabelle, Andrew Hubacher* (WorkShop’s Life on the Mississippi) as Dad, Kayla King as Mom, Claire Kwon as Julie, Noah Marlowe* (Bdwy: Mary Poppins) as Tommy, Shelly McPherson* as Tommy’s Mom/Officer O’Dooley, Sydney Ryan Robles as Danielle, Madisyn Shipman* (Bdwy: Enron; Off-Bdwy: Pippi Longstockings) as Christina/Lulu the dog, Garielle Smith-Goldson as Malika, Ryan Bauer Walsh* (Nat’l Tour: Billy Elliot) as Mr. Lucky/Officer Ortiz, Lauren Weintraub* (North Shore’s Annie) as Emma, and Ashton Woerz* (Bdwy: Priscilla Queen of the Desert; Nat’l Tour: Radio City Christmas Spectacular) as Andrew.

Billy Witch at APAC - November 1-17

Picture
Gregory S. Moss, playwright
THE ASTORIA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (APAC) is pleased to announce the New York premiere production of Gregory S. Moss’s (punkplay, House of Gold) BILLY WITCH, choreographed by Wendy Seyb (The Pee Wee Herman Show, Yeast Nation), with original music by Nathan A. Roberts, musical direction by Brenna Sage and directed by Erik Pearson (Billy Witch, Studio 42). BILLY WITCH will play a limited engagement at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church (30-44 Crescent St, Astoria, NY 11102. Entrance on 30th Road.) Performances begin Thursday, November 1 and continue through Saturday, November 17. Opening Night is Saturday, November 3 (8 p.m.).

In this quirky, creepy, bawdy comedy, 14-year old Oliver braves the wilderness to discover change at sleepaway camp. Miles away from home, surrounded by pubescent boys and girls, Oliver is not prepared for the life altering transformation he will soon experience. From twisted first sexual encounters, to spooky campfire stories unfolding before his eyes, Oliver's time at camp is anything but normal.

BILLY WITCH was initially written when Moss, who L.A. Weekly says “blends Eugene Ionesco with Christopher Durang,” was in residence at The Millay Colony in Austerlitz, New York. It was first workshopped at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, in 2008, under the direction of Vanessa Gilbert. The play was produced at Northeastern University, Boston, in 2010, directed by Jonathan Carr. In early 2012, a developmental production was produced by Studio 42 and directed by Erik Pearson.

APAC's Artistic Director, Tom Wojtunik chose the play after missing the workshop at Studio 42 last February, which garnered tremendous word of mouth in the theatre community. He states, "as soon as I read the script I knew that the experience of BILLY WITCH would be a special one for APAC's audience. I look forward to seeing how director Erik Pearson utilizes APAC's unique space to tell the story." When asked why he first chose to develop the piece, Studio 42 Artistic Director, Moritz von Stuelpnagel said, “when you mix Ovid's Metamorphosis with classic camp horror, you get this terrific blend of high brow and low brow entertainment that is surprising and deeply satisfying. The show is an immersive theatrical experience full of sex, horror, absurdity, and straight up nostalgia for those long gone days of summer camp.”

The production features Eric Bryant* (Angels in America, Signature Theater) as Arden, Britain Gebhardt as Jenny, Aimee Howard* (Austerity of Hope, Barrow Group; Claymont, EAT) as Miranda, Dawn Luebbe* (Onasses Comedy, UCB & College Humor) as Counselor Becky, Allyson Morgan* as Sue, Seamus Mulcahy* (Killing Lincoln; Our Town, Barrow Street Theater) as Oliver, Andy Phelan* (APAC’s MilkMilkLemonade;  CSC’s Galileo) as Billy, Luke Robertson* (Yale Repertory Theatre, Baltimore Center Stage) as PD Lockwood, Will Roland as Michael, Hasmik Anna Saakian as Melody, Ben Schnickel as Peter, Nicholas Urda* (Private Lives, Two Rivers Theater) as Counselor James, and Liz Wisan* (Other Desert Cities) as Sandy. (*Performing courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association.)

The production features scenic design by Tim Brown, costume design by Elizabeth Barrett Groth, and lighting design by Marie Yokoyama. Chris Barlow is the sound designer, Daniel Dabdoub is the props designer, Robert Westley is the fight director and Jessa Nicole Pollack* is the production stage manager.

Williams, and directed by Rosalyn Coleman Williams. “JUSTICE”, The Web Series will World Premiere this week on http://blip.tv/justicetheseries.  The accompanying app will be available from iTunes with the episodes, behind the scenes footage, character blogs, and more.

Driven by regret, he will stop at nothing to avenge Candace’s murder. Immersed in the sex and drugs of the music industry, Justice uncovers secrets and temptations that push him to the edge.

Life on the Mississippi at WorkShop Theater - September 12 - September 22

Picture
WORKSHOP THEATER COMPANY is pleased to announce Play-in-Progress production of Philip Hall’s LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI, A Musical Play, musical directed by Fran Minarik and directed by Susanna Frazer. LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI will play a limited engagement at The Jewel Box THeater (312 West 36th Street, 4th Floor). Performances begin Wednesday, September 12 and continue through Sunday, September 22.

Hair-raising, hilarious, life-changing and violent are just some of the currents steamboat pilot Sam Clemens will navigate in this musical journey. Young Sam Clemens and his brother Henry step onto a Mississippi steamboat and aboard the chance of a lifetime. As a cub apprentice, his burning ambition propels him to become a steamboat pilot, but he soon discovers that learning the great, relentless river will be harder than he ever imagined. Now Sam must navigate the hair-raising, hilarious and dangerous currents, as mysterious as the Mississippi itself.  This musical adaptation is based on Mark Twain's memoir.

“This is not only a coming of age tale, but it's also a loss of innocence tale,” says writer Philip Hall who has been named a finalist for both the National New Play Network’s SMITH prize and Humana Festival’s HEIDEMAN Award, and whose work has been performed at the Kennedy Center.  “In this case, what begins as a boyhood dream becomes more like a daunting task when it becomes real.  But the piece is "early Twain," and there's a freshness and bounce to the prose, along with his trademark wit,” reflects Hall, who ultimately felt it was the language that inspired him to adapt the book to stage.

Cosi at Urban Stages from Australian Made Entertainment - September 7 - 23

Picture
AUSTRALIAN MADE ENTERTAINMENT is pleased to announce the New York premiere production of Louis Nowra’s COSI directed by Jesse Michael Mothershed. COSI, a funny and poignant play, marks the inaugural production of Australian Made Entertainment, a theatre company dedicated to showcasing Australian plays in New York City. COSI will play a two-week limited engagement at Urban Stages (259 West 30th Street). Performances begin Friday, September 7th and continue through Sunday, September 23rd. Opening Night is Sunday, September 9th (2 p.m.).

Set in a Melbourne mental institution in 1971, Cosi is the classic Australian comedy by renowned playwright Louis Nowra.

When Lewis, a recent university graduate, accepts a job directing mental patients in a performance intended to bring them out of their shells, he gets more than he bargains for as the show the patients choose is Mozart's opera Così Fan Tutte.

To make matters worse, the venue for this performance is a fire-gutted theatre with a leaking roof and faulty wiring. The cast includes a pyromaniac, a junkie, a manic-depressive, a knife-wielding romantic, a confused realist, a Lithium-addicted pianist who hates Mozart, and a stuttering ex-lawyer who refuses to take part in the production. Lewis, needless to say, is slightly discouraged by the task at hand.

The production stars Duke Anderson (Sweeney Todd national tour) as Zac, Zach Bubolo* (Alice vs. Wonderland) as Nick, Olivia Etzine (Mergers and Acquisitions) as Lucy, Kathleen Foster (Grimm) as Julie, Matthew Foster* (Mildred Pierce) as Roy, Laura Iris Hill (Neighbours) as Ruth, Joseph Thornhill (An Ideal Husband) as Justin, Stuart Williams (My One and Only national tour) as Henry, Annie Worden* (Misadventures in Movie Makin’) as Cherry, Adam Zivkovic (HALF) as Lewis, and Clint Zugel* (The Albatross) as Doug.

* Appearing courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association

The production features scenic design by Christopher Thompson, costume design by Emily Rose Parman, and lighting design by Greg Solomon. David Margolin Lawson is the sound designer and Anna Demenkoff is the stage manager.

COSI plays the following schedule through Sunday, September 23rd:

"On or about December 1910, human character changed." -- Virginia Woolf

Six people destined to change the world meet in Vienna in 1910 on the eve of the First World War.

Vienna is the crossroads of civilization: art, music, science and politics but beneath its façade of frivolity and joy, the city is rotting at its core, sickened by moral corruption, obsessed with death and ravaged by hatred of the Jews.

Against this background, Gustav Mahler, the great composer and conductor, falls in love with the beautiful, tempestuous Alma. Their passion flairs but their love is doomed and Gustav seeks the help of Sigmund Freud to save his marriage.

Ludwig Wittgenstein, destined to become a dominant force in world philosophy, runs into an old schoolmate, with unpleasant consequences. Wittgenstein expounds his hatred of women to Gustav Mahler and reveals his inner demons to Freud.

Freud psychoanalyzes Mahler and uncovers deep psychic trauma. Joseph Stalin, passing through Vienna, tries to recruit Alma into becoming a Bolshevik revolutionary and meets a man over a game of chess — a man with whom one day he will engage in a titanic struggle to the death. In the end, Freud faces what he has always denied: the essential evil nature of man. And, in a gesture of compassion, Freud almost destroys the world.

Good Pictures

One bloody night in a small town jail, an ailing immigrant and a young hustler construct an uneasy alliance – and a desperate escape plan. A night-shift guard lies shot and dead outside a county jail cell.  Two criminals, impossibly different, are stuck inside for five claustrophobic, brutal hours.  Using a loaded gun, a flute, and dime-store candy, they rush to construct an escape plan before the morning shift arrives – if they can avoid killing each other during the night, one of them might go free, and live to settle a score.

Living in a lonely manor house in 1906 England, Archibald Craven yearns for his beautiful, late wife. He blames his crippled son, Colin, for his wife’s death and has left him neglected and isolated. Their quiet routine is turned upside down when young Mary Lennox, a rich, spoiled child, is sent to live with them following the death of her parents by cholera in India.

While living at the manor house, Mary discovers a secret walled garden hidden in the grounds and releases the magic and adventures locked inside, changing their lives forever. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman, in collaboration with composer Lucy Simon, achieved Broadway success with the moving book and lyrics adapted from Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved 1911 novel. Using the classic form of the traditional American musical, they have fashioned a faithful rendition of the novel, equally appealing to children and adults, to devotees of the novel and to Secret Garden newcomers as well.

The Secret Garden premiered on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on April 25, 1991, and closed on January 3, 1993, after 709 performances. Directed by Susan H. Schulman with choreography by Michael Lichtefeld, the cast featured Daisy Eagan as Mary. It won the 1991 Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Daisy Eagan), and Best Scenic Design (Heidi Landesman). Eagan at age 11 was the youngest female recipient of a Tony Award.

The musical was subsequently produced in Australia in 1995, and in a heavily revised version at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Straford, UK in 2000, which transferred to the West End in 2001.

The Secret Garden was The Third Annual World AIDS Day Benefit Concert, held on December 5, 2005 at the Manhattan Center Studios Grand Ballroom, New York City, directed by Stafford Arima, but has not been seen in New York City in a full production since its Broadway premiere.

The production stars Jennifer Evans* (Ragtime and A Tale of Two Cities, Broadway) as Lily, Benjamin J. McHugh* (Mamma Mia! and Hairspray, Nat'l Tours) as Dr. Neville Craven, Jaimie Kelton* (Greenwillow, The York) as Martha, Hannah Lewis (Seussical, Westchester Broadway Theatre) as Mary Lennox, Michael Jennings Mahoney* (Camelot, B'way Concert) as Dickon, Sam Poon* (Les Misérables, Nat'l Tour) as Colin, Patrick Porter* (Blood on the Dining Room Floor, WPA) as Archibald Craven, Jacqueline Sydney* (The Children's Hour, APAC) as Mrs. Medlock, Richard Vernon* (The Human Comedy, APAC) as Ben, as well as Jane Bunting*, Mario Castro, Marisa Devetta*, Britain Gebhardt, Jonathan Gregg*, Clint J. Hromsco, Mary-Elizabeth Milton, Eric Morris*, Jan-Peter Pedross*, Lia Peros, Jason Pintar, Spencer Robinson, and Elizabeth Wharton.

The production features scenic design by Michael P. Kramer, costume design by Ryan J. Moller, and lighting design by Dan Jobbins. Colin Whitely is the sound designer, Ashley Cavadas is the props designer and Jessa Nicole Pollack* is the stage manager.

THE SECRET GARDEN plays the following regular schedule: Thursdays at 8 p.m. | Fridays at 8 p.m. | Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Tickets are $18, available online at www.apacny.org or by calling 866-811-4111. Tickets may also be purchased in-person at the Theatre Box Office, 30 minutes prior to the performance.

Theater For The New City, Crystal Field, Artistic Director in association with the cell are pleased to present an encore engagement of The Hive's critically-acclaimed gender-bender production of William Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S (QUEER) DREAM -- April 25 - May 19

“Easily the most persuasive and compelling Midsummer of the dozen I have seen… bold choices unlock a level of this play which is rarely discovered… The Hive's vision shows us real people in real pain. It's still a comedy, but with a bitter edge — a remarkably effective balance of kinky delights and profound frustration.” – Show Business Weekly

“Ground-breaking interpretation of this play…A MUST SEE!” – nytheatre.com

“The timing of this gender-bending version of Shakespeare's ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ couldn't be more appropriate given New York State's recent legislation for same-sex marriage.” – Back Stage

“Immensely enjoyable…with wit and wicked imagination, artistic director Matthew A.J. Gregory challenges marriage inequality” – The Advocate

“This is not your 10th grade English class's Shakespeare.” – Broadway World

“The buzz on the Hive’s Midsummer could not be sweeter, busier, more joyful, and oh, so worth the tiny ticket price… revisit Shakespeare’s wealth of words, marvel at the perfection of couples brought together from pure love and lust with no meddling laws to obstruct. It is perfect that a play penned five centuries ago is a modern vehicle to celebrate the summer of same sex marriage.” – Edge

“Staged with the playful spirit and insane lust as many previous Midsummer productions but with a few twists that ultimately reinforce the show’s classic ribbing on the passion, dysfunction, power plays, and half-crazed acts of love… In changing the gender roles and the expectations that come with it, the characters gain complexity while displaying the universal draw of forbidden romance, unrequited love, and the constant one-upmanship for dominance over your partner. – Women About Town

“The cell and The Hive’s rendition totally hit the spot… Shakespeare’s text with a mélange of characters and scenes that truly reflect relevant cultural issues… A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a dream I never wanted to wake up from.” – Inside New York

Theater For The New City, Crystal Field, Artistic Director in association with the cell are pleased to present an encore engagement of The Hive's critically-acclaimed gender-bender production of William Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S (QUEER) DREAM, directed by Matthew A.J. Gregory. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S (QUEER) DREAM will play a limited engagement at the Johnson Theatre-Theatre for the New City (155 First Avenue, btw. 9th/10th). Performances begin Wednesday, April 25 and continue through Saturday, May 19. Opening Night is Friday, April 27 (8 p.m.).

“The course of true love never did run smooth, and it doesn’t run straight either in the Hive Theater Company’s immensely enjoyable mounting of Shakespeare’s comedy about star-crossed Athenian lovers. With wit and wicked imagination, artistic director Matthew A.J. Gregory challenges marriage inequality simply by casting a woman as Lysander and a man as Helena — not to mention the fairy drag queen Titania and drag king Oberon.” – The Advocate
This is not your grandmother’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but one for 21st century NYC—a modern re-imagining of Shakespeare’s classic, which casts Hermia and Lysander as lesbian lovers with Demetrius and Helena as a gay couple. In the midst of the national gay marriage controversies, this production exposes contemporary America's sexual hang-ups and resistance to gay marriage. Concepts of what constitutes gender, sexual orientation and power will be explored and exploded! A wild bacchanal of every fetish imaginable--filled with delectable and dangerous fairies straight out of everyone’s fantasies and fears.

The production stars Chris Critelli* (frequent appearances at Lincoln Center Songbook Series, Off Broadway – THE NEW HOPEVILLE COMICS) as Puck/Philostrate, Meghan Grace O'Leary* as Oberon/Hippolyta, Samuel Gaines* (KING LEAR at Kansas City Rep) as Titania/Theseus, Shira Gregory* (FROST/NIXON on Broadway) as Lysander, Alan Winner* (Trevor Nunn’s GONE WITH THE WIND in the West End) as Demetrius, Marissa Parness as Hermia, Michael Raver * (Notable credit - VIEUX CARRE at The Pearl Theatre Co directed by Austin Pendleton) as Helena, Ron Bobst * (Notable credits - WOYZECK at Toy Box Theatre Company, TOGETHER THIS TIME at NY Fringe (Lucille Lortel Theatre)) as Egeus/Tom Snout/Peasblossom, Chris Thorn* as Nick Bottom, Sarah Kauffman as Quince/Moth, Fernando Gambaroni* (Flea Theatre – MRS. FARNSWORTH with Sigourney Weaver, Mac Wellman’s CELLOPHANE) as Robin Starveling.

The production features scenic design by Justin Couchara (Recent:  Asst. Scenic Designer for Peter and the Starcatcher, Lead Props Sculptor for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), costume design by Elizabeth Barrett Groth, and lighting design by Nick Gonsman (Recent:  Field Project Coordinator for ETC). Stephanie Riddle is the sound designer, Kyle Haggerty is the assistant director, Jen Littlefield is the choreographer, Scott Barrow is the fight director, Kirin McCory is the assistant fight director, Joseph Jonah Therrien is the shadow puppet designer and Lauren Williams is the stage manager.
